To look after Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty permanently for the benefit of the nation across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. 

The trust owns 200 historic houses that are open to the public. The majority of them are country houses, and most of the others are associated with famous individuals. The majority of these country houses contain collections of pictures, furniture, books, metalwork, ceramics and textiles that have remained in their historic context. Most of the houses also have important gardens attached to them, and the trust owns some important gardens not attached to a house.

Monkey World

Set amongst the woodland of Dorset lays 65 acres of sanctuary for over 250 primates. Monkey World Dorset was set up in 1987 by Jim Cronin to provide abused Spanish beach chimps with a permanent, stable home.

Jurassic Coast

The layers of sedimentary rock along the Jurassic Coast can be read like a book. They reveal the history of Earth across 185 million years and form a near complete record of the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.

Tank Museum

Our exhibitions tell the story of armoured warfare from World War One to the present day. As you explore the Museum's six large halls you will come face to face with vehicles that have seen action in all the major wars.

Corfe Castle

Corfe Castle is a fortification standing above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck in the English county of Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates to the 11th century and commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Wareham and Swanage.

Sculpture by the Lakes

Nestled in 26 acres of Dorset's glorious countryside lies Sculpture by the Lakes, an oasis for art lovers and collectors alike created by renowned sculptor Simon Gudgeon and his wife, Monique.

Lawrence of Arabia

Thomas Edward Lawrence, CB, DSO (16 August 1888 19 May 1935) was a British archaeologist, military officer, diplomat, and writer. He was renowned for his liaison role during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign and the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War.

National Trust

The National trust in Dorset features some of its finest properties, coastline reserves and castles. Most properties are within half an hours drive from us and are ideal for a day outing.

Dorset County Museum

Dorset County Museum is an independent museum. Owned and managed by the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, it receives financial support from Dorset County Council and West Dorset District Council.
